The Ramsey Office of Emergency Management (OEM) is the
local, municipal level of the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA). Founded over fifty years ago as Civil
Defense-Disaster Control, RAMSEY OEM, today, is concerned mainly with man-made and natural disasters although it
was heavily involved with relief efforts during the WTC tragedy.
The group is headed by coordinator Mike Adams and deputy coordinators Bruce Greenwood and Sgt. Glen Karpovich (Retired). The RACES and RADEF divisions are under the supervision of Lou Janicek and Wayne Lemme, respectively. The thirty member staff conducts training sessions and drills, using the 600 page Emergency Operations Plan. The document, recently re-written with input from all borough agencies, was approved by the county and state. Members, most of whom are also ham radio operators participate in support work for local walk-a-thons, bike-a-thons, and other public service events that require supplemental communications support. Many member are also trained First Responders, EMT's, Volunteer Fireman, etc. Members have distinguished themselves with volunteer work with The Red Cross and Salvation Army during the World Trade Center Disaster, during Hurricane Floyd, the recent disasterous Hackensack fire, etc. The RAMSEY OEM is always looking for new members. Members span high school students to the ranks of Senior Citizens. The Ramsey OEM meets on the 2nd and 4th Wednesday of the month, at the Emergency Operations Center (EOC) on the lower level of the Municipal Building.
